A development of the D IIIa engine, this type employed dome piston heads to provide a higher compression of 5.8:1. It's often referred to as the high altitude high compression Daimler engine due to it's use of an altitude throttle and higher compression - this enabled the engine to retain it's rated power to higher altitude.
