The Typ 200 was the first newly developed car following the Daimler-Benz merger.
The car's 2-liter 6-cylinder M02 engine was the source for its name as it produced 38 hp.
Although a fine engine for its time, the M 02 was rapidly tweaked to offer more power and soon evolved into next-generations models.
However, the basic architecture of the engine was kept for a long a time, placing the W 02 among some of the best engines produced by Mercedes.
Also, the 8/38 would provide the foundation for a trade-mark styling that would prove to be very persistent, such as the Prominent wheel arches, wide door sills, reversed shield grille and circular headlamps.
