A slightly smaller engine than the MB 836 was the MB 846, also developed in Untertürkheim and later built in Berlin-Marienfelde. As a six-cylinder in-line engine with a 150 mm bore and 190 mm stroke, it was intended for universal use in railcars, aggregates and ships. In 1956, the "Hörnum" was the first seagoing ship to be equipped with three MB 846 engines and thus with high-speed engines.
