GERMANY'S ZEPPELINS

Use of Diesel Engine

Despite recent charges that the great American dirigible, the Akron, had not been properly built, it is generally conceded that extreme care was taken to give ample strength to all parts of this large airship. Dr. Karl Arnstein, its designer, trained in the Zeppelin Works in Germany, is naturally a specialist on stresses.

Thus his joy can be imagined when he ran into a new little device on a recent trip to Germany which records defections and stresses in aircraft structure over long periods of time such as 30 to 40 hours.

The unusual thing about this device is that the record is put on a very small piece of glass, states the Christian Science Monitor.”

At present such information on American ships is gathered on long strips, of recording paper which is difficult to handle. The records of the new instrument are easily handled and yet may be enlarged to the size necessary to give the required information.

THE DIESEL ENGINE Dr. Arnstein was particularly interested in the work being done on Diesel engines in Germany, since the type of motor has been considered for the new dirigible now being built in Akron.

He stated that Maybach the Machine Company of Augsburg and Nurenburg, and the Junkers factories are all carrying on work with Diesel motors. So important are the Diesel engines seen in the part the dirigible will play in the future that work on the huge new Zeppelin being built, in Friedrichshafen is being held up pending progress on these motors. One or another of the three companies mentioned is expected to have a satisfactory motor by next year. During 1932 Luftschiffbau Zeppelin will continue its programme of demonstrating to the people of the world that the Zeppelin can be used in regular transoceanic transportation, Dr. Arnstein says. A schedule of 20 transatlantic crossings and 10 round trips between Friedrichshafen and Rio de Janeiro has already been worked out for the year. At the end of the year the heads of the company expect to be able to point with pride to the fact that this schedule, fixed for a whole year, has been adhered to.
