OM 646 / OM 647 / OM 648
Mercedes-Benz OM 646, OM 647 og OM 648 var en serie med dieselmotorer, bestående av en 4, en 5 og en 6 sylindret motor. Disse motorene erstattet de eldre OM 611, OM 612 og OM 613. Både OM 646, OM 647 og OM 648 hadde 88.0 mm boring og 88.3 mm slaglengde, blokk i støpejern, lettmetall topp, og var utstyrt med andregenerasjons Bosch common-rail direkteinsprøytning av diesel. Commonrailtrykket var opp til 1600 bar. Motorene var utstyrt med turboer med variabel geometri, luft til luft intercooler, og dobbel overliggende kamaksler, som virket på 4 ventiler pr sylinder via vippearmer. Motorene hadde 18.0:1 i kompresjon og en elektronisk styrt EGR ventil. Forpumpen var elektrisk.
På samme måte som forgjengeren, benyttet motoren en pilot-innsprøytning før hovedinjeksjonen av diesel, den lille pilot-innsprøytningen lot en liten mengde diesel forbrenne i sylinderen, og på den måten oppnår man en forvarming av sylinderen før hoved forbrenningen, og dette før til raskere driftstemperatur på motoren, og en bedre varme og trykkfordeling gjennom hele forbrenningstakten. De største variantene av motorene var utstyrt med Lanchester balanseaksler, som roterte med dobbel hastighet, mot dreieretningen til veivakselen.
I 2006 kom OM 646 EVO som i prinsippet erstattet både OM 647 og OM 648. Sammenlignet med den opprinnelige OM 646, var nitti komponenter internt i motoren nye.
De viktigste endringene i EVOen var
- Lavere kompresjon 17.5:1, råden var gjort kortere.
- Ny turbolader, og ladeluftkjøler
- Redesignet innsugningsmanifoil
- Nye keramiska glødeplugger, for bedre start og roligere gange under oppvarming, og kalde forhold.
